Counsellor FAQs

What to do if my client is in crisis. +

If your client is in crisis there is a list of crisis help lines here. If you are able to assist them but are unable to cover the cost we do have an expedited process when we know that the client is in crisis. We suggest that you apply to become one of our approved practitioners before you have a client that needs assistance as this will also expedite the process.

I currently do not have a client in need of funding, should I still be applying to be an approved practitioner? +

Yes, we suggest that you apply to be an approved practitioner as soon as possible so that when you have a client needing funding you are already approved.

Client FAQs

What if I have my own counsellor already? +

You can ask your counsellor to apply to be one of our approved counsellors. If they are accepted then you can continue seeing them and receive DGS funding.

If I need long term mental health care, is there a limit to the DGS funds I can receive? +

As long as you continue to see one of our approved clinicians and continue to make progress in your mental well being, then there is no limit to the funds.

I have been put on DGS’ wait list, when can I expect to receive funds. +

It is our hope to be able to help every person that requires help when they need help. Unfortunately, since funds are limited this is not always possible. We will continue to update you on your status and will provide you funds as soon as possible.

How do I know if I am eligible for DGS funding? +

It is our hope to provide help to all those in need of financial assistance for mental health care. For specific care please reach out and we can go over your specific situation.

Will DGS cover the entire cost of my therapy sessions? +

DGS is here to provide funding after your other resources have been exhausted. It is our expectation that you will provide some amount even if it is minimal to cover the cost, as well it is expected that your practitioner also covers some of the costs. We will cover the gap between what your practitioner can cover and what you can cover, up to $150 per session.

How do I find out what my private insurance covers? +

Coverage depends entirely on your specific employer-sponsored or private plan. To check what limits, practitioner types, or copays apply to you, you can use your provider’s member portal, or call the AHS line at 1-855-550-5454 for specific mental health benefit queries.

What should I do if I need immediate mental health support? +

You can call 811 (Health Link) for free 24/7 health advice. For crisis intervention in the Calgary area, the Distress Centre Calgary offers 24/7 support at 403-266-HELP (4357), or you can simply call or text 9-8-8 anywhere in Canada.

Who do I contact if I don’t know where to turn? +

To navigate non-emergency social and clinical services in the city, you can contact 211 (available by phone, text, or web) or visit 211 Alberta to find community-based health and mental wellness supports.
